Agrupaciones de Desove de Peces: Caribe y Golfo de México

Un grupo de investigadores se reunió en La Paz, Baja California Sur, México, el 28 de Octubre de 2008 como una iniciativa de la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, la Institución Oceanográfica Scripps (California) y Pronatura Noroeste AC. La reunión fue encabezada por el Dr. Brad Erismann (Scripps Institution of Oceanography), Dr Octavio Aburto-Oropeza (Scripps Institution of Oceanography). El Dr Gustavo Danemann (Pronatura Noroeste AC) coordinó la actividad dentro del Congreso de la Sociedad Ictiológica Mexicana. La idea de la reunión fue presentar una perspectiva internacional sobre las agrupaciones de desove de peces a nivel mundial para abordar aspectos medulares sobre las agrupaciones de desove en México. Los investigadores invitados fueron la Dra Yvonne Sadovy (University of Hong Kong, y Society for the Conservation of Reef Fish Aggregations), Dr. Martin Russell (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Australia, y Society for the Conservation of Reef Fish Aggregations), Dr. Matthew Craig (Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology), Dr. Will Heyman (Texas A & M University) y el Dr Alfonso Aguilar-Perera (Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán). Los productos de la reunión redundarán en la elaboración de un documento científico de divulgación y una publicación científica arbitrada sobre la situación de las agrupaciones de desove en México. A group of researchers held a meeting in La Paz, Baja California Sur, México on October 28, 2008, as part of an initiative by the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (California), and Pronatura Noroeste AC. The meeting was headed by Dr. Brad Erismann (Scripps Institution of Oceanography) and Dr Octavio Aburto-Oropeza (Scripps), while Dr Gustavo Danemann (PRONATURA Noroeste) hosted the event as part of the Symposium of the Mexican Society of Ichthyology. The idea was to present an international perspective on the fish spawning aggregations and address key aspects on fish spawning aggregations in México. The invited researchers were Dra Yvonne Sadovy (University of Hong Kong, and Society for the Conservation of Reef Fish Aggregations), Dr. Martin Russell (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Australia, and Society for the Conservation of Reef Fish Aggregations), Dr. Matthew Craig (Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology), Dr. Will Heyman (Texas A & M University) and Dr Alfonso Aguilar-Perera (Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán). The products of the meeting will include a scientific document for divulgation and a scientific peer reviewed publication on the current situaton of the fish spawning aggregations in Mexico. El laboratorio de investigación de Felicia Coleman y Christopher Koenig, de la Universidad Estatal de Florida, ha estado estudiando al mero Goliat (Epinephelus itajara) desde 1996. Con la ayuda del Instituto de Investigación de Vida Silvestre de Florida, ellos están desarrollando un catálogo de avistamientos del mero Goliat a través del sureste de los Estado Unidos. The Research Laboratory of Felicia Coleman and Christopher Koenig, from the Florida State University, is studying the Goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) from 1996. With the help of the Florida Wildlife Research Institute (see FWRI Hotline), they are developing a catalogue of Goliath grouper sightings throughout the southeastern United States. El mero cabrilla (Epinephelus guttatus) es capaz de desplazarse hasta 33 km durante su migración en búsqueda de sitios de agregación reproductiva en Islas Vírgenes Americanas (USVI, por sus siglas en inglés). Esto es parte de los resultados obtenidos por Richard Nemeth y colaboradores (2007) en su artículo científico reciente. Ellos también encontraron que existe un patrón temporal en la llegada al sitio de acuerdo al sexo del pez; los machos llegan primero y permanecen más tiempo en el sitio de agregación. Asimismo, la formación de la agregación completa se verifica desde el solsticio de invierno (diciembre 20) a febrero 20. El artículo de Nemeth y colaboradores puede accederse en el enlace abajo.

The Red hind (Epinephelus guttatus) can move up to 33 km during its migration heading to spawning aggregation sites in US Virgin Islands. This is part of the results obtained by Richard Nemeth and collaborators (2007) in their recent scientific article. They also found that there is a temporal pattern in the arrival to the site according to fish gender; males arrive first and stay longer at the aggregation site. Likewise, the formation of the whole aggregations takes place during the winter solstice (December 20th) to February 20th. Un nuevo proyecto subvencionado por el Instituto Caribeño de Arrecifes de Coral (CCRI) estudia la producción de sonidos por el mero cabrilla (Epinephelus guttatus) en lugares de agregaciones de desove de Puerto Rico. El objetivo del proyecto es determinar la utilidad de los sonidos y sus variaciones para identificar lugares de agregaciones a través de escalas espaciales. Buzos con cámaras de video modificadas con hidrófonos externos (micrófonos submarinos) filmaron meros cabrillas machos que producían un sonido único (conocido coloquialmente como el ‘Whoot-woo’) mientras hacían sus despliegues territoriales. El sonido de los meros cabrillas ha sido identificado de aquel producido por otras especies observadas en el mismo lugar. Además de las grabaciones hechas durante 2 meses (período de desove) se observaron cambios en niveles de sonido siguiendo patrones diurnos y mensuales que pueden estar asociados con el momento del desove. Grabadoras pasivas de acústica prometen ser una herramienta útil para identificar agregaciones de desove y evaluar su ocurrencia en lugares remotos. Los investigadores involucrados en el proyecto son David Mann y James Locascio de University of South Florida; Richard Appeldoorn, Michelle T. Schärer Umpierre and Michael Nemeth de la Universidad de Puerto Rico-Mayagüez.

A new project funded by the Caribbean Coral Reef Research Institute (CCRI) was recently launched to study the sound production by the Red hind (Epinephelus guttatus) at spawning aggregation sites off Puerto Rico. The aim is to determine whether the species-specific sound production can be used to identify aggregation sites over large spatial scales and to study variation in sound production. At known aggregation sites, divers using underwater video cameras with external hydrophones (underwater microphones) filmed a group of male Red hind that were producing a unique sound (now colloquially known as the ‘Whoot-woo’) during displays. This sound is distinct from sounds produced by other fishes (the longspine squirrelfish and bicolor damselfish) at the same site. At the study site, various long-term underwater acoustic recorders were placed to record Red hind sound production over two months (the spawning period). A preliminary analysis of recordings showed a strong diel pattern to sound production with a peak at dusk and monthly peaks; this may be related to the timing of spawning. Passive acoustics recorders show a great promise for identifying spawning aggregations over large spatial scales for long-term monitoring of spawning aggregations of sound-producing fishes at remote locations. Researchers involved in this project are David Mann and James Locascio, from University of South Florida; Richard Appeldoorn, Michelle T. Schärer Umpierre and Michael Nemeth, from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez.

The University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College Program (UPRSGCP) is seeking high quality proposals for its 2008-2010 competitive marine research program.

For the last 28 years our mission has been to promote the conservation and sustainable use of the coastal and marine resources of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in ways that benefit the entire population and the Caribbean in general. One of 31 programs throughout the coastal United States, the University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College Program achieves its mission through a multi-faceted approach that includes: research, outreach and formal (K-12) and informal education programs.

UPR Sea Grant links the university, which focuses on the development of theoretical and applied research, with regional and national agencies, and stakeholders in a way that increases our understanding of coastal and marine ecosystems and habitats, coastal communities and economies, coastal hazards, urban coasts, and the application of digital technologies.

Our request for proposals for 2008-2010 presents a new set of research areas.

In line with the National Sea Grant College Program’s theme areas, the following priority needs were identified as the most important ones for our region:

Ecosystems and ecology: From microbial ecology to regional ecological interactions of the Caribbean Sea.

Coastal hazards: prediction, models, policies and the impacts of events on coastal communities and the economy.

Climate change: science, policy and societal impacts.

Land use impacts: the land-coast interface, coastal development, watershed management, water quality, pollutants and toxics, groundwater, and impacts to wetlands, estuaries, coral reefs and associated habitats.

Coastal processes: the oceanographic dynamics of waves, currents and the deposition of sand and sediments, alteration of coastal habitats, and loss of shoreline.

Socioeconomic processes of resource use and coastal communities: traditional ecological knowledge, economic valuation of coastal and ocean resources, participation in governance and institutional arrangements, resilience of communities, and gentrification.

Mariculture: new technologies, bio-fouling effects, biotechnological applications, optimal systems and policies.

Certainly, these topics are interrelated as they depict the complexity of coastal and ocean ecosystems, which are always intersected by the human experience. We strongly recommend that research proposals give serious consideration to this fact. In addition, each research proposal must include an outreach or education component that enables the sharing of research results with potential information users.
