La Sociedad para la Conservación de las Agregaciones de Peces Arrecifales / The Society for the Conservation of Reef Fish Aggregations

El 21 de junio de 2000, en La Paz, México, durante un simposio titulado “The Importance of Spawning Aggregations in the Lives of Reef Fishes” dentro de la reunión anual de la Sociedad Americana de Ictiólogos y Herpetólogos, se formó la Sociedad para la Conservación de las Agregaciones Reproductivas de Peces Arrecifales (SCRFA, por sus siglas en inglés) para hacer consciencia sobre la vulnerabilidad de las agregaciones reproductivas de peces y trabajar hacia una protección y manejo adecuados. La SCRFA se compone por un comité de 7 científicos y alrededor de 300 miembros alrededor del mundo, incluyendo biólogos, conservacionistas, manejadores pesqueros, educadores, pescadores y comunicadores. Su objetivo principal es componer una membresía diversa para apoyar directamente, promover y facilitar iniciativas relevantes como un cuerpo independiente. Las actividades de SCRFA incluyen la documentación de la condición actual e historia de las agregaciones, sinópsis y desarrollo de métodos apropiados para la documentación, estimación y monitoreo de agregaciones y especies agregadoras, políticas de conservación y manejo, información biológica, y educación y conscientización. On June 21st, 2000, in La Paz, México, during a venue symposium entitled “The Importance of Spawning Aggregations in the Lives of Reef Fishes” as part of the annual meeting of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, emerged the Society for the Conservation of Reef Fish Aggregations (SCRFA) for rising awareness about the vulnerability of fish spawning aggregations and work for a better protection and management. The SCRFA comprises a board of 7 scientists and around 300 members worldwide, including biologists, conservationists, fishery managers, educators, fishermen, and communicators. Its main objective is to serve a diverse membership for directly supporting, promoting, and facilitating relevant initiatives as an independent body. The activities of the SCRFA include the documentation of current and historical status of aggregations, synopsis and development of methods suitable for documenting, assessing and monitoring aggregations and aggregating species, conservation and management policies, biological information, and education and awareness-raising.
